The technicians in an auto shop aren’t just licensed to make your car look good. They are also responsible for keeping the roadworthiness of your vehicle by abiding by various standards and regulations. If you figure in a collision, you should seek the service of an I-CAR accredited mechanic or auto shop. But what is I-CAR accreditation and why does it matter?
What is I-CAR?
I-CAR or Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair is a prestigious organization that has been setting the bar for collision repair for more than 40 years. They provide training and accreditation to individuals and shops alike that will handle the repairs.
They aim to promote road safety through efficient and long-lasting repairs. Unlike other car damage, collision brings a myriad of complications on a vehicle. This is why I-CAR ensures that the repair will be done properly, safely, and completely.
Also, I-CAR aims to promote the best skills in the collision repair industry. This way, car owners will have peace of mind that their vehicles are in good hands.
Is it important to have I-CAR accreditation?
Yes, because having this certification means that the auto shop abides by the highest industry standard. It also means that they have the latest equipment for collision repair.
The best part here is that I-CAR provides continuous training to the individuals and shops that bear their accreditation. This is to guarantee that they will maintain the quality of their service over the years.
So if you see an I-CAR accreditation logo in an auto shop, consider it a big deal. Such a shop has met the highest criteria in collision repair and they have continual training for their staff.
Also, the I-CAR training gives technicians the added confidence in conducting repairs. You can expect that they will not resort to guesswork. This is a critical aspect, especially if you have an expensive car model.
What skills does I-CAR accredit?
Under Platinum recognition, I-CAR provides training and accreditation for six repair roles. These are for the estimators, non-structural technicians, steel structural technicians, and refinish technicians. It also includes aluminum structural technicians and mechanical/electrical technicians.
Each of these roles has to pass three levels of accreditation and training called Pro Levels.
For the Pro Level 1, the technician must gain the individual Platinum designation by showing mastery of skills during the training. Take note that this certification should be renewed yearly together with the Pro Level 2 accreditation.
Lastly, Pro Level 3 can be achieved by passing the examination within 12 months after securing the Pro Level 2 certificate.
Once the technician aced all three levels, he or she is required to complete a minimum of six credit hours of training annually. This way, they can retain their certifications and keep up with the demands of the industry.
I-CAR accreditation is one of the most prestigious certifications that an auto shop or auto technician can receive. On your part as the car owner, it’s a guarantee that the shop can provide the best repairs for your vehicle.
