Why You Should Repair Auto Glass Before Tinting

Here in Arizona, people love to tint their car windows. And why not. It looks cool and it is a great way to keep the sun’s harmful UV rays from penetrating your window and turning your car into an oven. But what happens when your window gets chipped or cracked prior to tinting. Should you just tint over the top? Or should you get your window repaired first?

What does the law say?

There is no law in Arizona that prevents drivers from driving with chipped or cracked windshields so long as the damage doesn’t inhibit the driver’s performance or hamper their vision. There also isn’t a specific law outlawing getting a tint placed over a cracked windshield. That being said, if a police officer sees you driving with poorly tinted windows because of cracks and chips, they may pull you over and ticket you if they think it equates to dangerous driving.

Just because it isn’t illegal doesn’t mean that you should get it done, however. In fact, here at A+ Plus Auto Glass, we strongly recommend getting your window repaired before tinting — here’s why…

You’ll get a poor tint

The fact of the matter is that if you don’t repair your window first, you are likely to get a very poor tint quality. That’s because you are unlikely to get a clean finish when part of your auto glass is broken. Tinting will not hide blemishes in your windshield and chips may, in fact, impair the rest of the tinting process, resulting in a messy and unprofessional job. What’s more, it costs nothing to get your window repaired if you have auto insurance. There really is no reason not to get your car windows repaired prior to getting them tinted. Trust us, it will look much, much better.

But what about cracked tinted windows

Cracked tinted windows can get replaced just like normal windows. If you take your car to a quality auto glass repair center, like A+ Plus Auto Glass, our trained technicians will be able to remove the tint and then repair the glass at normal. It will then be your choice whether you add the tint back on yourself or pay for a professional to do the job.

Whatever you choose, just make sure that you use a professional when it comes to repairing your window. And make sure that you repair any chips in your window before applying tint in the first place.
